Life story

Born on the 22nd of May 1999 in Ugba-ibeku, Ikwuano, Abia state, Samuel Chukwueze ( Chukwueze meaning “God is king” in the Igbo language) was brought up a Christian and is the first child of three. He has two siblings, a brother, and a sister.

Chukwueze attended the government college Umuahia, one of the oldest and most popular secondary schools in Nigeria. Several notable alumni, including Chinua Achebe, the writer of things fall apart. He went on to finish secondary school education at Evangel secondary school at 16.

Chukwueze started playing soccer at the tender age of 8. In doing so, he idolized Nigerian all-time great, jay-jay Okocha. He was also mentored by Hon. Victor Apugo, who was the former General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection


It is a known fact that initially, his parents were against him playing football. Still, after showing great promise as a youth player, they were more than happy to let him continue.

Chukwueze started his football career at the Diamond football academy before joining the Villarreal youth team in 2017. Samuel made his senior team first appearance with the Villarreal reserves on the 15th of April 2018, coming on as a second-half substitute in an away draw to CE Sabadell FC.

Finally, after a stellar run with the youth team and reserves, Chukwueze was given his shot at the limelight. At just 19, He made his first-team debut for Villarreal against Rangers in the UEFA Europa League. On the 5th of November 2018, he made his La Liga debut in a draw with Levante. He went in to play the full match.

Chukwueze scored his first senior goal for the yellow submarines on the 20th of May 2018, in his teams 3-1 thrashing of Athletico Bilbao. He made off with two goals in 11 appearances in his very first season in La Liga.

Chukwueze had a prolific run with the under-17 Nigerian football team, which won the U-17 world cup in 2015 with his help and a squad of other wonder kids, including Chinedu Madueke and Victor Osimehn, amongst others.

His amazing performance at the U-17 world cup drew attention to him, and teams around Europe started scrambling for his signature. Invariably he ended up signing for Villarreal picking. His 25 seconds goal against Chile in Nigeria’s 5-1 win was the fastest of the U-17 world cup tournament. He also went on to win the Bronze Boot with three goals in the entire tournament.

He received his first cap as a senior player after been called up by the super eagle's coach Gernot Rohr in October 2018. He made his debut at the draw to Uganda on the 20th of November the same year. Since then, he has gone on to score 3 goals in 13 appearances for the super eagles as of June 2020.

Chukwueze is a diverse player and functions as a Right winger, left winger, and an attacking midfielder (center, right or left), but he plays mostly as a right-winger. He plays with the iconic number 11 at his back for Villarreal. He has scored 12 goals in 68 games in all competitions for Villarreal as of June 2020.

He plays most time either from the bench or starting a few games. He gels well with the several established football players on the Villarreal squad, including Paco Alcacer, Santi Carzola, and Gerard Moreno, to mention a few.

Samuel Chukwueze is a talented dribbler who is never afraid to go for take-on. He is very dangerous when his team is on the counter. With his dribbling ability, he is fond of cutting in to take shots. He prefers long balls and crosses to classic short passes.
